KPU President Alan Davis Responds to Surrey Motion on Land Acknowledgements

Dear Mayor and Council,
The City of Surrey has recognized in many ways the Indigenous heritage of this land that we are blessed to share with our First Nations, in friendship and in peace.
However, I feel the need, on behalf of KPU, to share my disappointment regarding the January 11th decision of Surrey City Council to not support the following motion:
That the City of Surrey develop a meaningful, respectful acknowledgment before every council and committee meeting of our commitment as a city to reconciliation and recognition that the land we are on is the traditional territory of the Coast Salish people.
This has caused sorrow and pain among our Indigenous communities in our region, and no doubt others will be in contact with you about the message that your decision sends.
In support of reconciliation, all levels of government provide such an acknowledgment at every opportunity. Sometimes we stumble or forget, but the expectation of our country, our province and our community is that we strive to do better in this respect.
Education is fundamental to reconciliation and I am sharing my request with Drs. Tinney and Johnston who work alongside us to raise awareness and understanding among our students
I respectfully ask Council to demonstrate its leadership by reconsidering its decision.
