Consultation & Research
The creation of this resource was a deeply collaborative process done in consultation with Indigenous colleagues and community members.
Indigenous Community:
Gayle Bedard, Melinda Bige, Natalie Wood-Wiens, Allison Hotti, Richard Pierre, Selina Boan, Napatsi Folger, Jessica Knott, Nadine McSpadden, colleagues from Native Education College, North Island College Indigenous Education Navigator Willow, Mary O’Donnel retired Dean at Sault College
Settlers and Allies:
Kelsey Chaban (KPU Library), Deanne Esdale (SFU), Maggie Reagh and Corey Muench (Capilano University)
This is a continuation of the decolonization work done in spring 2024. The faculty of Academic and Career Preparation formed a team to work on decolonization at KPU. Team members included Lee Beavington, Tanya Burnstad, Sean Conway, Angela Godber, Mitra Gorjipour, and Lesley Hemsworth. Dean Aimee Begalka was also involved. We developed a collaborative code of ethics, informed by the xéʔelɬ KPU Pathway to Systemic Transformation, that guided how we engaged in this work as colonial-settlers. This included recognizing our implicit biases, being clear on intentions, learning about local Indigenous people’s territories, and amplifying Indigenous voices. You can read our full collaborative code of ethics in this PDF.
The content and website were developed by Lee Beavington. Lee is a third-generation colonial settler. He was born in Treaty 3 territory, and raised in Coast Salish territory.
Thank you to the Teaching and Learning Commons Team for additional support. Amanda Gray for providing the website template that Decolonizing Educational Practices was built from, and Olivia Jeon and Robin Leung for assistance with WordPress.
