Pan: when the camera moves along the horizontal axis from one side to another
Tilt: when the camera moves along the vertical axis pivoting up to down or down to up

Zoom: a cinematic technique where the camera lens is used to move in or out of a scene at a variety of speeds (i.e. zooming out or in)

Focus Pull: when the focal point of the picture gradually shifts from one spot or subject to another (also called racking focus)

Transition: an editing technique used to switch from one scene to another – common transitions include the crossfade, wipe, jump cut, match cut, cutaway, freeze frame, cut zoom in/out, split screen, reveal frame, and collage

Classroom Activity

Work with a partner to create short video clips using different framings (full shot, close-up), a zoom, and pan, and if possible a focus pull. Take turns creating each shot, then watch back on the viewfinder and discuss the effectiveness and execution of each clip.

If there is time, collect each group’s favourite clip, transfer all clips to the instructors laptop/computer and share via projector with the cohort.
