Since 2017, she has recorded&nbsp;brief&nbsp;videos of her&nbsp;lectures&nbsp;&nbsp;using&nbsp;an&nbsp;iPad&nbsp;and posted them to Moodle for her students. These videos have been very helpful&nbsp;in her transition&nbsp;to remote instruction.&nbsp;&nbsp;Easily&nbsp;&nbsp;follow&nbsp;along&nbsp;as&nbsp;Jennifer uses a split-screen approach,&nbsp;allowing students to both&nbsp;see and hear&nbsp;her speaking from the&nbsp;bottom&nbsp;left corner of the screen&nbsp;and&nbsp;see&nbsp;the&nbsp;the&nbsp;various&nbsp;steps&nbsp;involved in&nbsp;solving&nbsp;an equation. Each group will now work asynchronously&nbsp;on building a PowerPoint presentation that&nbsp;uses material created for the original presentation.&nbsp; Students will include the following types of media:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;video clips of students explaining concepts and presenting ideas in a similar manner to how live presentations would have occurred;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;imagery and infographics to explain and demonstrate choices;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;text and hyperlinks to support their&nbsp;ideas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The online version of PowerPoint does not support audio recording or video capture directly in the software,&nbsp;so students will make videos&nbsp;or audio recordings&nbsp;on their smartphones, forward them to one member of their group who will take the PowerPoint session offline in order to add the video and audio.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day of the presentation, Gordon will receive&nbsp;the final version of the PowerPoint session via email.&nbsp; Lesley has compiled her course changes into a <a href=\"https:\/\/kpuemp-my.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/g\/personal\/gordon_cobb_kpu_ca\/ESudPt8mK-tKo43glCkYvAEBBXww0_3PW-MZ3QXJ1aZ3Cw?e=ecrnO3\">new class plan<\/a>, which other instructors could easily use as a model when rethinking their own courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arley&nbsp;Cruthers&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Arley.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-567\" width=\"116\" height=\"150\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Arley teaches both an advanced communications course&nbsp;and a pathway communication course for international students.&nbsp;In both courses, she&nbsp;used Robin DeRosa\u2019s \u201cRule of&nbsp;2\u2019s\u201d sheet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/colab.plymouthcreate.net\/covid19\/rule-of-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/colab.plymouthcreate.net\/covid19\/rule-of-2\/<\/a>&nbsp;to identify her priorities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arley decided to focus on student connection. She used mail merge to send out a personalized email to each student asking how they\u2019re doing. She also offered flexibility around assignment&nbsp;deadlines&nbsp;and&nbsp;asked students for feedback into how to best&nbsp;proceed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though her advanced communication class was already online, she had planned an in-person&nbsp;oral presentation in the library.&nbsp;Arley offered her students two alternatives&nbsp;for the presentation:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To&nbsp;create&nbsp;a&nbsp;video&nbsp;and send&nbsp;it&nbsp;<\/li><li>To&nbsp;&nbsp;create&nbsp;a&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cliving archive\u201d of their lives during Coronavirus, using a wide variety of multimedia approaches. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/14fR6zc4CDpIWLh7HFvxIWqmpNI-k4fKcSZnChfVBIFY\/edit?usp=sharing\">Assignment prompt:<\/a>&nbsp;).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally,&nbsp;to help students feel connected, Arley has been writing along with them and creating her own Coronavirus journal.&nbsp;She also simplified&nbsp;many&nbsp;participation activities, focusing instead on giving students opportunities to provide feedback to each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;the&nbsp;pathway course,&nbsp;Arley&nbsp;decided to focus on simple, low-tech solutions:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Eliminated&nbsp;the oral presentation assignment, since the learning outcomes had already been tested in other ways.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Created&nbsp;simple, interactive H5P slides&nbsp;to cover a small amount of content that remained&nbsp;<\/li><li>Created&nbsp;a&nbsp;short Kaltura video&nbsp;explaining the changes&nbsp;to the&nbsp;final assignment.&nbsp; Students will now have the option of revising existing work in a portfolio or (since&nbsp;some&nbsp;students don\u2019t have a laptop) doing a simplified version of the Coronavirus journal, since this can be completed on a mobile phone and achieves many of the learning outcomes.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"839\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-19-at-1.38.46-PM-1024x839.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-19-at-1.38.46-PM-1024x839.png 1024w, https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-19-at-1.38.46-PM-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-19-at-1.38.46-PM-768x629.png 768w, https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/drcobb\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-19-at-1.38.46-PM.png 1460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>A screenshot from Arley&#8217;s Living Archive<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>These four faculty members teach very different subjects and have different approaches, but all focused on simplifying their courses&nbsp;and&nbsp;using only small amounts of synchronous, video-based communication.
