Kenyon Wilson of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga hid $50 in a locker, with instructions to claim it given in the syllabus. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-the-monday-edition-1.6284012\/this-prof-hid-50-in-a-locker-to-see-if-his-students-read-his-syllabus-nobody-found-it-1.6284015\">No one claimed the money.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron Richmond suggests that we might welcome students by making our syllabi more <em>student-centered. <\/em>This could mean taking action to encourage students to visit during office hours, to build a shared learning community, to re-balance power and control between students and instructors, and to provide both <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/fshnotebook\/tag\/assessmentformative\/\">formative<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.wordpress.kpu.ca\/fshnotebook\/tag\/assessmentsummative\/\">summative<\/a> assessments throughout the semester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the benefits?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Students who receive a student-centered syllabus report more favourable views of their instructor, and they also tend to remember more details from the syllabus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the challenges?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Each class is individual, and what works for one class may not work for another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who&#8217;s using this?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Pending\u2026 if you\u2019ve used this technique and you\u2019re willing to share thoughts about your and your students\u2019 experience, send me an <a href=\"mailto:catherine.chow@kpu.ca\">email<\/a>!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>KPU&#8217;s Teaching and Learning Commons has created a Padlet <a href=\"https:\/\/kpu.padlet.org\/lisagedak1\/course-information-hub-4shh4j34gt482yqa\">template<\/a> that could support a student-centered course presentation. Consider copying this template to your own Padlet account to customize it, and then linking to it in your Moodle site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T&amp;L is also investigating the use <a href=\"https:\/\/simplesyllabus.com\/\">Simple Syllabus<\/a> to improve accessibility of a course presentation. Such a syllabus will pull some course information like meeting times, etc. directly from KPU systems.
