But how can an instructor scale this up to a group of students, and encourage low-stakes participation? Classroom response systems (or &#8220;clickers,&#8221; colloquially) are a common strategy to get student feedback in large classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpu.ca\/teaching-and-learning\/technology\/mentimeter\">Mentimeter<\/a> is a tool for building interactive presentations that could mimic clicker functionality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the benefits?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Hodges <em>et al.<\/em> (2017) have found that students report higher motivation and engagement when clickers are used in large-enrollment science classes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the challenges?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>It takes a lot of time to set up such a system, and you may also need to spend time teaching students how to respond.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who&#8217;s using this?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Jilian Lang of KPU Physics uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polleverywhere.com\/\">PollEverywhere<\/a> to create Game Night reviews for her students which combined a breakdown of the question with clicker-like technology. In the example she shared, she broke a complicated physics problem into individual steps.
