KPU’s Interim Position on Generative Artificial Intelligence

The development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) offers great opportunities for creativity and productivity while simultaneously bringing ethical considerations, and privacy and security risks. KPU encourages the responsible and ethical use of generative AI for business and teaching purposes within the confines of related institutional policies.

All employees and students must use and follow the relevant guidelines when engaging with generative AI at KPU.

Any technology that requires purchasing by KPU, or download, integration to other applications or access to a KPU-issued device or application must follow the normal IT request and approval process.

We recognize use of generative AI at work could be for:

  • personal management and professional development,
  • KPU business,
  • teaching and instructional design purposes,
  • specific curriculum and learning outcomes, and
  • to support learners on their educational journey.

Requiring students to create an account with these tools is not permitted because such use requires a full privacy impact assessment. Beyond that, at this time, the decision to use – or permit students to use – generative AI tools in their course lies with the faculty member, provided the use falls within KPU’s guidelines.

Examples and additional resources for these business uses are detailed below:

  • Student learning guidance is currently under development
  • Research guidance is currently under development

Given the constantly evolving nature of this technology, KPU continues to review and update generative AI guidelines. We encourage our community to visit this site often for updates.
