Workshops on Generative AI

Regular Workshop Offerings

The Teaching and Learning Commons offers several regular workshops on Generative AI every semester. Here is a brief description of these offerings

Have you heard about Generative AI but don’t really understand what all the hype is about? This session is designed for people who want to learn more about GenAI, its practical use, evaluating when to use or not to use GenAI and the ethics of use for themselves and their students.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, you have the opportunity to

  • Understand the basic concepts of Generative AI
  • Recognize the potential applications and ethical considerations of Generative AI
  • Identify where GenAI is and is not effective

Are you interested in exploring how to enrich your teaching methods with Generative AI? This workshop will provide an overview of AI in education, and share some practical applications for bringing GenAI to your courses. Case studies will be explored.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, you have the opportunity to

  • Ability to integrate AI tools into educational teaching activities
  • Understand the benefits and challenges of using AI in education
  • Gain practical knowledge through case studies of AI integration in education

Discover how Generative AI can transform your out of class operations. In this Workshop we will explore how GenAI can be your creative partner, your collaborator and a tool for building efficiency and effectiveness in more repetitive tasks. We will look at adopting GenAI to build lesson plans, craft Rubrics, create specific case studies, and craft media for presentations, allowing you to refocus your efforts where they are needed most.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to

  • Understand how to apply AI in various office practices
  • Learn about the transformative impact of AI on creative and logistical tasks
  • Gain insights into the use of data analysis for research

Are you intrigued by the possibilities of using Generative AI in your work but come up frustrated with the results when you try out a new tool? In this workshop we will explore several evidence-based prompt engineering techniques to effectively and efficiently produce the desired response from Generative AI. Instructors are encouraged to bring their own GenAI projects or ideas for projects for use during the workshop.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, you have the opportunity to

  • Learn how to design effective prompts for various AI tasks
  • Understand the importance of testing and refining prompts
  • Gain practical knowledge through real-world examples of prompt design

This workshop is intended to provide some strategies around designing assignment rubrics to account for Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). We’ll discuss full integration, allowing students to use AI throughout their work, and partial integration, where AI is used for specific assignment components. We’ll also cover mitigation strategies to privilege student-generated content. Participants will gain insights into GenAI’s capabilities and limitations, helping them design rubrics that align with their approach to GenAI usage. The workshop will provide language suggestions and examples for developing rubric criteria and performance indicators.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, you have the opportunity to

  • Recognize the capabilities and limitations of GenAI models in content creation for assignment completion
  • Examine rubric design strategies and considerations for full and partial integration and mitigation of GenAI
  • Evaluate the role of GenAI in your course as it relates to assignment and rubric design
Customized Workshops on Generative AI

Our Strategists from the Teaching and Learning Commons can deliver workshops on Generative AI for your department, faculty customizing content based on your teaching and learning needs. Please contact TLCommons@kpu.ca if you are interested.

  • Please check out TL Commons Events page for dates and times for some of these offerings on a semester-by-semester basis.

Generative AI Community of Practice

The Teaching and Learning Commons is initiating a Community of Practice to bring together educators using or considering using GenAI in their courses with their students. It is our intention that this group will work together to develop knowledge, share use cases and inform KPU leadership decisions around GenAI tools, policies and processes.

Everyone is welcome. Click here for more information

Rubric Design for Generative AI

Provide feedback on assessment rubric design for permitting, not permitting, and permitting for specific use of GenAI for assignment completion. Depending on your need, the feedback can support mitigation strategies to privilege human-generated content, or feedback for collaborating with Generative AI. Click here for more information

Please contact GenAIrubrics@kpu.ca if you are interested.

Generative AI Champions Program

Teaching and Learning Commons has created a program offering faculty time releases to champion the development, advancement, and deployment of practical applications for Generative AI in pedagogical practice.  As these faculty champions keep pace with the development of GenAI capabilities by integrating Generative AI into their teaching practices and establish best practice, they will communicate and share findings with other colleagues in their department, faculty, and the University at large.
