Syllabus Language

To further support instructors in communicating with their students regarding their intentions around the use of GenAI in their courses, we have developed formal syllabus language for your use.

It is important to communicate clearly about the acceptable uses of GenAI in your course.

If requiring or permitting use, this should include details, citation requirements, tracking prompts, submitting outputs as an addendum to the assignment etc.

If restricting use, this should include an explanation of why the use of GenAI is not appropriate for the discipline specifically, and /or the learning and assessment activities planned for the course.

It is ideal to provide students a rationale for your directions such as the impact on learning. We encourage discussion of risks and an opportunity to ask questions. For additional guidance check out the Teaching and Learning Commons resource <https://dev.wordpress.kpu.ca/generativeaitlkpu/gai-teachinguse/>.

Please note, if you use Simple Syllabus, this language has been prepopulated in the system, and you will be able to select your choice with a toggle switch in that resource. For this of your who choose to create you own syllabus please see the following language.

Generative AI Language Options

There are three levels of use of Generative AI at the discretion of the instructor.

Instructors who require the use of GenAI tools in their course must use the formal “Notice of Use “language in their syllabus. This language may be found on Freshdesk at this link <Notice of Use – Required Generative Artificial Intelligence in this Course : TEACHING & LEARNING COMMONS KNOWLEDGE BASE>

The “Notice of Use” language is also included here.

Notice of Use

This course includes the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools to complete learning and assessment activities. Some of these tools may require you to create an account before using them and may ask for personally identifying information in the account registration process. It is important that you are aware of the way in which these tools might use your data.

To protect your privacy and intellectual property, you should:

  1. Provide only the minimum of personal information (such as your email address) when registering for the tool.
  2. Never input any personal information about yourself or other people into the GenAI tool’s prompt– including facial or other identifying images.
  3. Many GenAI tools use the information that you input into the tool to train their AI model and for other purposes. As KPU has no control over the ways these GenAI tools collect, use, disclose, or store your data, your inputs could be disclosed to other users of the GenAI tool or publicly. We recommend that you do not input any information or content into the GenAI tool that you wish to keep confidential or for which you wish to maintain intellectual property rights.

Your instructor has identified the following GenAI tools as necessary for the learning outcomes in this course:

Tool A

Filled in by instructor with links to the terms of service and privacy policy

Tool B

Filled in by instructor with links to the terms of service and privacy policy

You are encouraged to read the terms of service and the privacy policy of each GenAI tool that you use. If you are uncomfortable with the use of the tools prescribed by your instructor, you may discuss your concerns with your instructor to determine whether any alternative arrangements can be made.

Students are always responsible for all materials submitted to their instructor. Students should carefully review and confirm the accuracy of all materials that are created with GenAI tools.

[The instructor enters their own statement on GenAI tool use in the course here – i.e. How can the tools listed above be used in the completion of coursework?]

The use of any GenAI tools to produce coursework in any way not specified here is not permitted. KPU’s student academic integrity policy (ST2) and its procedure will apply to any unauthorized use of GenAI tools. <https://www.kpu.ca/sites/default/files/Policies/ST2%20Student%20Academic%20Integrity%20Policy.pdf>

If you have concerns about the use of GenAI tools in courses generally, please reach out to your Dean’s office.

The use of generative AI tools in this course is permitted or limited to particular learning activities and assessments.
