Intercultural Engagement in Practice

Course: GLBL 2000
Instructor: Christina Page

One-sentence summary:

Student groups research a specific SDG, connect this to course concepts, and give a mini-presentation.

An in-class SDG (sustainable development goal) assignment that students do each semester.

  1. Students choose an SDG to research in groups.
  2. Students then choose 2-3 concepts already addressed in the course, and determine how they would apply to the achievement of their chosen SDG.
  3. Students examine the way that their current learning at KPU, and within the course, allows them to contribute to the achievement of the SDG.
  4. Students prepare a mini-presentation/infographic to share.

In general, factors that limit inquiry-based learning in my teaching are:

  1. Inequitable technology access (not all students have an adequate device that allows them to contribute to research).  When students are using phones only, they tend to self-isolate and move away from the group task.
  2. Multilingual student needs (quick review of written or online content isn’t equally accessible to all students, and tend to result in some students “watching” while others take a stronger lead).
