Design Considerations

Who Are You Designing For?
We want to reach diverse audiences, which means our materials have to be clear, accessible, and engaging. Accessible design is an art that takes time and practice, and it can be overwhelming. But, you don’t need to do everything at once!
Here are some tips and tricks to get you started as you think about documents, presentations, websites, Pressbooks, videos, and other materials
Accessible Design Checklist
- Use clear headings
- Choose an accessible font
- Remember that some folks can’t see colour, so don’t use colour as the sole indicator of meaning. Instead, use colour to emphasize
- If you use colour, ensure there is a strong contrast between the background and text
- Provide Alt-Text on images
- Ensure videos are captioned; remember to edit the captions for accuracy
- Use meaningful hyperlinks rather than URLs
- Make use of bulleted and numbered lists for instructions instead of using big blocks of text
- Provide key information in multiple formats (audio, visual, textual)
