SUMMARY:Decoding the disciplines: Helping students move beyond learning bottlenecks
DESCRIPTION:University students are generally new to a field of study and can find themselves overloaded\, overwhelmed and frequently stuck in their coursework.\n\nHowever skilled or knowledgeable an educator may be in their subject area or pedagogical approaches\, it can be difficult to pinpoint why learners are getting stuck\, resulting in frustration and ongoing issues for both the educator and the learners.\n\nDecoding the Disciplines is an approach that can be used to unpack “bottlenecks in student learning”.\n\nIn this 90-minute online workshop\, KPU educators are supported in identifying a particular place in their course(s) where students are getting stuck; and considering why students might be getting stuck; by engaging in cross-disciplinary dialogue.\n\nBeing explicit about the nature of the “bottleneck” and focusing on the tasks or activities that students cannot carry out will allow for an opportunity to unpack the problem and consider what teaching and learning processes could support students in getting unstuck.\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Creating safer learning communities through a trauma-aware approach
DESCRIPTION:Roughly one in four Canadians is currently struggling with a mental illness (CMHA\, 2022). Increasingly\, our students are arriving with overwhelming anxiety and depression\, impacting their ability to learn. How can KPU instructors create safer and more connected learning communities? In this two-hour workshop\, we will begin to explore how to support safer learning spaces and create connected learning communities.  This workshop is an introduction to taking the necessary steps in the journey of trauma-informed teaching\, beginning with self-awareness. \nBefore engaging in the workshop activities\, we will take some time to recognize that our emotions are automatic and that our reactions are unique\, as exploring concepts related to trauma is complex and can be uncomfortable. It is important to note that participants in this workshop will be engaging in experiential elements\, including discussions and activities that may evoke uncomfortable emotions. The facilitators encourage a supportive environment\, and attendees should engage at their own pace and in their own way. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Crafting Effective Learning Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Learning outcomes have existed for generations\, however their use in post-secondary education is relatively recent. Since the mid 90s\, educators have been using learning outcomes to center their lessons on students\, to provide clarity around content\, and flexibility to instruction. Administratively\, outcomes have provided guidance for curriculum development\, clarity around quality assurance practices and consistency to program descriptions across institutions\, provinces and countries. This workshop will explore the history\, use and development of learning outcomes at a variety of levels for KPU.
